The Politics of Myanmar

Aung Zaw, Founder and Editor-in-Chief, The Irrawady

The Politics of Myanmar

Myanmar’s semi-civilian government has embarked on a series of reforms since 2011, drawing conditional praise from the international community. Two recent proposed legal changes would have eased the military’s grip on power further, but hurdles to opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s presidential bid remain in place. Aung Zaw, founder and editor-in-chief of The Irrawaddy, describes the Burmese political landscape in the lead up to the general elections due this November.
