HP has unveiled its contender for the tablet wars: the TouchPad.

It's not yet a crowded field. The dominant players is iPad of course and the only challenger thus far is the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which runs on a modified version of Android. However, this year will see several other contenders entering the ring including Motorola's Xoom which will run on Honeycomb (the new tablet version of Android) and RIM's PlayBook which has its own operating system. Other tablets are expected from companies such as Dell, Lenovo, ViewSonic, LG and Toshiba.

The TouchPad runs on WebOS, a collaboration between HP and Palm (after HP's acquisition of the latter). Here's a slideshow on the history of Palm, the company that set off the PDA revolution.

So far, the response to the TouchPad news has been mixed.

Research house Forrester thinks TouchPad can challenge all the other tablets but not the iPad.

I' ll take webos over other platform any day. But, can they compete with google or iphone ecosystem? Can they be serious like blackberry and cool like iphone at the same time?
