Morning Run 9.30am Podcasts

More than 70% of crimes in Malaysia are connected to drug abuse, and most former drug addicts go back to their old habits because they can't cope with society pressure and exclusion, and there is lack of proper treatment. The Jiwa Baru Education Programme aims to educate drug addicts on other medical treatments available to them apart from the traditional cold turkey approach used by public rehabilitation centres. And Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, the spokesperson of the programme, tells us how the programme was started and what society can do to help former drug addicts. On a cumulative basis over 20 years, it is estimated that there has been about 900,000 drug addicts in Malaysia. The numbers are going up despite enforcement efforts and the death penalty for drug traffickers.

On a personal note, Tan Sri Lee also talks about why he decided to leave the DAP party and do charity work.
