William T. Vollmann has written about prostitutes, crack, and war zones. He’s been investigated for terrorist activities. He won the 2005 National Book Award for Fiction for the novel Europe Central and many speculate that he is an excellent contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature. In this interview he and Uma speak about the history of violence, the future of freedom, and what it’s like being watched by the United States government.
