Before leading the advocacy group Women's Aid Organization, social work was not initially in Sumitra Visvanathan's career plans. An internship at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Kuala Lumpur after completing her law degree changed her life. It led her to five different countries over the span of 16 years assisting refugees and asylum seekers from all walks of life. She only returned from her most recent posting in Baghdad last year. We find out from Sumitra what it's like working in high risk, high security environments, and her plans for WAO going foward .
