Irene Fernandez passed away last month, leaving behind a legacy for being the voice for the marginalised. She is renowned for being at the center of one of the country’s longest trials that expose the misuse of the Printing Presses and Publications Act. Was Public Prosecutor Stanley Augustin right when he said that “Freedom of the press is not freedom to say anything you like. It must be confined and cannot hurt the public or national interest.” Or was Irene correct in putting human dignity ahead what some call “national interest”? You decide.
