"People in Sarawak have a right to choose alternative media to the relentless propaganda on the government controlled channels" said Clare Rewcastle Brown, the founder of independent station Radio Free Sarawak (RFS). Since its emergence into a tightly-gripped media landscape of the state in 2010, RFS has received international recognition and awards for its dedication to social change. Serving as a platform to unheard voices of the Sarawak natives, RFS itself faces continuous probing and air-wave disruptions from the the state authorities. This week, we look at how the independent station shaped the media landscape of rural Sarawak.
