Since the early part of the 10th century, the Muslim Empire effectively separated religion and politics. However, in contemporary Muslim societies this separation has come to have negative connotations. Its viewed as a system imposed by Western colonial rule. Can these two concepts be reconciled? We explore the historical context of this problem and suggestions of how to think through it.
