What makes a person an expat and another a migrant? With only three percent of the world population currently living outside their birth country at the moment, a figure which includes both voluntary migrants and refugees, Dr Amanda Klekowski von Koppenfels, a senior lecturer in migration and politics at the Brussels School of International Studies, explains the baggage that comes with the term “expat” and clears up some common misconceptions about migration today.
