Matthew Ong's reportage of the controversy surrounding power morcellation, published in The Cancer Letter, drew the attention of the medical profession and lawmakers to the hazards of the procedure and FDA's regulation of medical devices. In November 2014, FDA severely limited the use of power morcellation in the vast majority of women. Matthew's coverage in the Washington-based independent newsletter led to the shutdown of a Harvard trial, and his reporting on adverse events contributed to federal action in 2015 by FDA, FBI, the Government Accountability Office, and a Congressional subcommittee. We speak to Matthew about the role of investigative journalism in the medical field.
