The problem of the Rohingyas is not a new story but unlike the popularity of the other international causes the Rohingyas and their plight find few champions among Malaysian NGOs and politicians. The media too only occasionally highlights their persecuation. Over the decades the Rakhine Buddhist and Muslim Rohingyas have been involved in incidents of violence in the Western Myanmar state of Arakan. While both communities have been implicated, the Rohingyas have been disproportionately targeted by Rakhine Buddhist civilians and government forces. We take a look at a recent episode of violence in Maung Daw district, legal-political sources of discrimination and some simple solutions that require that rare commodity called political will.
