Our regular Roundtable take on the following proposition: The last five decades of authoritarian governance was a necessary period of political tutelage because at Independence politicians and the electorate were ill prepared for liberal democratic politics. But the culture of authoritarian rule engendered its own problems making it difficult for us to transit to a liberal democracy.
