In 2013, 4,123 cases of domestic abuse were reported, and 39 percent of women are estimated to have been abused by their partners and a large number of these cases go unreported due to reasons such as fear of retaliation. Furthermore, Malaysia's domestic violence laws do not cover abuses that take place between unmarried couples.
