The Gig Economy: Here To Stay

Today on the show, we’re exploring a topic that has become a significant part of our work culture here in Malaysia – the gig economy and the rise of flexible work. Joining me in the studio today is Abby Toh, Co-Founder and CEO of CollaTeam. They’re a job technology platform that provides part-time jobs and freelance gigs in Malaysia.

Over the past few years, Malaysia has seen rapid growth and acceleration in the adoption of gig work, with more individuals embracing the flexibility and autonomy it offers today than ever before.

Partly driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, this shift has prompted significant changes in how industries operate and how legislation is applied in today’s workplace environment. The gig economy is no longer a nascent trend but a prominent feature of Malaysia’s employment landscape.

As we explore this topic in today’s conversation, we’ll discuss how Malaysian companies have adapted to this new work environment and ways for gig economy platforms to ensure fair treatment for their gig workers moving forward.

We’ll also look at the sustainability model for platforms that provide gig work and flexible work hours, as well as what needs to be done to improve them as we embrace the future of work.
