American Patriot: James Donovan and the Bridge of Spies

James B. Donovan, the protagonist of Steven Spielberg’s latest movie, Bridge of Spies, has faced down Nazi war criminals, KGB officers, and Fidel Castro. He was the most successful American practitioner of metadiplomacy during the Cold War, someone who could operate above and beyond the usual diplomatic channels to disarm “the world’s best jugglers of words and ideas." Umapagan Ampikaipakan picks up where the movie left off. He speaks to James' children - Jan, John, and Mary Ellen - in an attempt at finding out more about the man behind the movie.
