The latest data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia indicating that nearly half of formal sector employees earn less than RM2000 ringgit a month lends urgency to the government’s plans to introduce a progressive wage policy. But given the voluntary nature of the policy, how much effect could it actually have? We speak to economist Dr Geoffrey Williams on measures to improve wages and productivity.
