Malaysia Day 2019: Tokenism In The Media

Every year, Malaysia Day is marked on the 16th of September to commemorate the union of Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore. The relationship between the various parties has vacillated between fractured to tenuous to perhaps obliging, as an imbalance of power and disenfranchisement continues to exist. Still, every year on the 16th of September, the now Sabah and Sarawak are feted as being part of the family, with indigenous culture spotlighted as part of Malaysian heritage. How do Sabahans and Sarawakians feel about the same tropes gussied up year in year out in the name of unity? We speak to two members of the media from those states, to gain an insight.
