The ongoing South East Asian refugee crisis has put Malaysia under increased scrutiny due to its treatment of migrants attempting to enter the country. For many refugees already in the country, the risk of further exploitation persists due in part to their status as illegals. We explore some of the challenges these refugees face, the role of the UNHCR in helping them and suggestions for improving their current status.
