The sacking of Professor Datuk Dr. Mohammad Redzuan Othman from his post as director of Universiti Malaya’s Centre for Democracy and Elections ruffled many feathers and reopened the debate on academic freedom in Malaysian universities. How do professors negotiate the space within universities to teach, write and talk about topics that are deemed politically sensitive? We speak today to three academics from three different disciplines to get their take on the issue.
