Benign Violation: Making Jokes in the Face of Tragedy

On April 1st, we did a Talkback that asked the question “how soon is too soon?” It was in reference to the disappearance of MH370, a tragedy that very quickly gave rise to some rather unsavoury jokes. We heard your opinions and we decided that it was necessary to do a follow up. We decided to find out just why people joke in the face of tragedy. Just what works and what doesn’t. We spoke to Peter McGraw, a marketing and psychology professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, is an expert in the interdisciplinary fields of emotion and behavioral decision theory. What’s more, he is the director of the Humor Research Lab (HuRL) where he studies what makes things funny.
