Each year, tens of thousands of curious visitors eschew typical tourist vacation destinations in favour of poverty stricken slums in cities like Mumbai, Johannesburg and Rio de Janeiro. Is it immoral and exploitative, or simply a more direct way to confront the realities of inequality and poverty? We speak to a professor well acquainted with this debate.
